Global popularity of Korean language surges

More than 10,000 were enrolled at King Sejong Institutes ― Korea’s state-run Korean language institutes operating overseas ― last year, double the number of students registered when the language school was established in 2009, according to the Culture Ministry.

The institute was founded in 2009 with 4,301 students enrolled at 17 branches in six countries in 2009.

According to Ahn Mi-jung of the Korean Language Policy Division of the Culture Ministry, the language schools, also known as Sejong Hakdang, was established to serve the needs of Koreans living overseas.
Foreign students take TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) at Kyung Hee University in Seoul on Sunday. A record number of students ― 19,344 of them ― took the test on Sunday at 14 locations nationwide. (Park Hae-mook/The Korea Herald)

However, the number of non-Korean students has been growing rapidly in recent years as more become interested in Korean culture in response to hallyu, a Korean cultural wave including K-pop and K-dramas.

Sejong Hakdang’s L.A. branch, for example, did not receive many non-Korean students when it opened. At the time, 75 percent of its students were Korean-Americans. But this year, 74 percent of its students are non-Korean. At its basic-level classes, more than 90 percent of the students are non-Koreans.

“We hope to see those who are interested in Korea’s pop culture deciding to learn the Korean language, and those who learn the Korean language getting interested in Korea’s pop culture at the same time,” said a Korean Cultural Center Los Angeles official, who is in charge of running Sejong Hakdang’s L.A. branch.

“Aside from the hallyu effect, more people overseas are interested in learning the Korean language as many Korean corporations have entered the overseas market and therefore have created jobs for the locals,” the official said.

The institute currently has 76 branches in 35 countries, including 17 in China, five in Vietnam, four in the U.S., three in Russia and Turkey, and one in Nigeria.

The government plans to increase the number of Sejong Hakdang branches to 90 by the end of this year, and to 200 by the year 2016, the Culture Ministry said.

Digital art show celebrates K-pop

S.M. Entertainment to hold an IT exhibition on K-pop singers in collaboration with global firms

S.M. Entertainment, one of the country’s three major entertainment agencies, is hosting the world’s first interactive entertainment exhibition in Seoul next month in collaboration with global firms. The S.M. Art Exhibition will present various types of entertainment content visualized through state-of-the-art IT technology.

Don’t let the title mislead. Despite being called an “art exhibition,” the event is more of a high-tech show rather than an exhibition.

The list of programs and shows includes “Fantasy Tree” ― a 13-meter-high circular installation consisting of 55 Samsung LED screens ― that shows super-sized S.M. Town artists performing in virtual space, “S.M. Motion” that offers the visitors a chance to experience the 360 degree camera technique that was used in the Hollywood movie “Matrix,” and a media show with Hyundai Motors using projection mapping technology. Among the jumbled up offering of IT and entertainment is SHINee’s live performance shown in a 3-D panorama theater. Visitors will also have a chance to make video calls and meet stars, sneak into artists’ secretive daily lives and view props used in concerts.

The only event that sounds like art is its collaboration with figure artist Michael Lau.

“The internationally acclaimed artist used TVXQ and SHINee as motives to his art work and added wit and humor to his creations,” S.M. Entertainment said.

The S.M. Art Exhibition is one of the latest events organized by entertainment agencies experimenting with new business method ― selling their content to big firms or collaborating with them.

YG Entertainment, led by former Seo Taiji member Yang Hyun-seok, is operating global collaboration with Hyundai Card on the branding of artists’ albums and Cheil Industries in the fashion business while JYP, led by singer Park Jin-young, has worked with Samsung Electronics. JYP has been offering its music content to Samsung’s digital devices.

S.M. Entertainment, on the other hand, seems to have taken the lead in its collaborations with big firms. It has become literally an all-in-one enterprise that develops entertainment content, makes it sellable and launches it in the market to finally reach “die-hard” fans or customers, not necessarily with help from big global firms.

As a sideline event, S.M. is holding “S.M. Town Live World Tour III” in Seoul on Aug. 18, a day before the exhibition ends.

“This time, all of our singers, including Kangta, BoA, TVXQ, Super Junior, Girls’ Generation, SHINee, f(x) and EXO, will present a varied show,” the agency said in a statement. The S.M. Entertainment artists performed in the United States in May and Taiwan last month, drawing attention from the local media. Before the Seoul show, they are scheduled to perform in Tokyo on Aug. 4-5.

S.M.Art Exhibition takes place at COEX, Samseong-dong in Seoul from Aug. 10 to 19. Tickets are 25,000 won and 85,000 won. For ticket purchase, visit www.ticket.auction.co.kr or call 1566-1369.

INFINITE steals hearts once again at ‘That Summer’ concert

INFINITE proved once again that they know how to make fans swoon at their ‘That Summer‘ concert series, which opened in Seoul on August 8th.

While their concert in April filled 10,000 seats each time, INFINITE’s ‘That Summer’ concert series consisted of a much smaller stage with only 2000 seats, making fans feel even closer to the boys than ever before. Their concert series this summer had a ‘summer vacation’ concept, creating a light and joyful atmosphere for fans.

Starting with ‘She’s Back‘, ‘Entrust‘, ‘That Summer‘, ‘Amazing‘, ‘I Like You‘, and a new version of ‘Wings‘, the members blew fans kisses and fooled around amongst themselves, making fans laugh and cheer along with the boys.

Along with their generous fan service, there were a few minor accidents and mistakes that occurred in the standing section of the audience. Member Woohyun said to fans calmly and lovingly, “You don’t belong to anyone else. You’re all ours“, making fans scream.

INFINITE also surprised fans with new unit INFINITE H, consisting of rapper line members Dongwoo and Hoya, who sang a new song, ‘When You’re Not Here‘. The main vocals of the group, Sungkyu and Woohyun, also created a new unit and sang for fans the sweet song, ‘White Confession‘.

The concept for ‘When You’re Not Here’, revealed for the first time during the ‘That Summer’ concert, was a classic black and white look, with Dongwoo and Hoya sitting luxuriously in red chairs, showing off their sexy and chic attitudes, as well as their rapping abilities and charisma.

On the other hand, the vocal line wore softer white tones to match ‘White Confession’ and flaunted the vocal talent they both displayed on KBS‘s ‘Immortal Song 2‘, making fans go wild.

The boys also tried their hand at working as a band with Sungyeol on drums, Dongwoo on bass, L on guitar, and maknae Sungjong on guitar. The new INFINITE band performed an amazing rendition of ‘Over The Rainbow‘. L’s experience from tvN drama ‘Shut Up Flower Boy Band‘ was evident in the performance, as he showcased his live guitar skills.

As expected, the boys displayed their perfectly synchronized dancing abilities, one of the aspects of their teamwork that made them well-known. Hoya commented in the beginning of the concert, “You must be bored because we haven’t been dancing yet. We’re going to dance a lot later. You’ll probably die“, again driving fans crazy.

The group started with easier songs like ‘Nothing’s Over‘ and ‘Cover Girl‘, which have cuter, easier choreography to follow the sweet melodies. The serious dancing started with hit song ‘BTD‘, in which the boys showcased their famous ‘scorpion dance’. They continued with songs like ‘Paradise‘, ‘Feel So Bad‘, ‘The Chaser‘, and ‘Be Mine‘, showing off the perfectly synchronized dance moves that they are well known for.

In addition to their great performance on stage, INFINITE also created adorable videos for the transitions between acts. The videos featured a camping concept and included games that showcased the personalities of each member, such as the ‘truth game’ and ‘rolling paper’ game, during which members spoke their true feelings about a variety of topics. The members revealed that they created the videos to “communicate better with our fans“.

In the ‘truth game’, members were only able to answer with ‘yes’ or ‘no’, making some questions difficult to answer. L answered the question “Nobody in INFINITE comes close to your looks” with a simple “Yes“, and leader Sungkyu explained, “I didn’t come to INFINITE due to my looks“, answering the question with a “No“, cracking the members  and fans up.

Sungkyu struggled with the awkward question, “Name 3 reasons why you don’t like our CEO,” to which he responded carefully, “He doesn’t wash, he nags us a lot, and he’s sensitive“, again making the members laugh.

The ‘rolling paper’ game consisted of anonymous messages written to the other members. Sungjong received messages like, “Congratulations on becoming an adult. Just don’t become corrupt” and the shocking “I’ve worn your underwear before“. Sungkyu received, “Please flush the toilet“, and Dongwoo received, “It’s scary when you sleep with your eyes open. You monster“, bringing out even more laughs from members and fans alike.

This summer, INFINITE made unforgettable memories with their fans during the 100 minutes of their concert from August 8th to August 12th.

INFINITE’s L looking fashionable… in a Superman costume?

A photo of INFINITEs L in an unexpected outfit has been revealed.

It turns out the idol group member was forced to wear his hilarious costume for their variety show, ’INFINITE’s Ranking King‘.

On this week’s episode, the boys head out on a summer trip. During this trip the members are forced to play a game of luck. In the first game in particular, each member had to pick a box and wear the clothes found inside.

L proved to be not so lucky as he ended up with the heavily muscled Superman outfit. In disbelief L asked, “Do I really have to film with this on?” unable to come to terms with his bad fortune.

Find out who will claim the title of  ’Lucky King’ in the upcoming episode on August 8th at 5 PM KST. Meanwhile, leave your comments below and take a guess at who you think is the luckiest member of INFINITE!

INFINITE reveals rehearsal photos for ‘That Summer’ concert

The INFINITE members have been spotted hard at practice for their upcoming ‘That Summer‘ concert!

Themed after a ‘summer vacation’, the boy group is working hard to make the concert a ‘vacation’ fans will never forget.

Member Sungyeol especially caused much laughter among the visiting news crew by stating, “I’m bare-faced right now so I don’t think taking photos is going to work for me.”

Although known well for their ‘precise choreography’, the members of the boy group plan to showcase a variety of other performances during their concert for it has been revealed that the group will be putting on special unit performances, one of which involves members transforming themselves into members of a band: L on the acoustic guitar, Sungjong on the keyboard, Sungyeol on the drums, and Dongwoo on the bass.

Dongwoo commented, “Time flies when I’m practicing (the bass)” while leader Sunggyu grumbled, “There’s so much to prepare and so little time left until the concert“, expressing his worry. The concert is said to be extra special as the members of INFINITE personally participated in the concert’s early preparation stage.
