EXID shares their thoughts on member changes and comeback preparations

EXID recently made their comeback with a few new changes to the group including two new members and a change in image.

In place of the departures of Yuji, Haeryung, and Dami came Solji and Hyerin. Their latest release, ‘Hippity Hop‘, shows the level of maturity the girls have grown into since their debut release, ‘Whoz That Girl‘, back in February. Fortunately, the girls were able to overcome the shortcomings of their debut and the loss of three members to come out as a better team.

Leader Solji stated, “People might think that we faced a crisis with the change of members, but it wasn’t like that at all. I’ve been with Hyerin in this agency for a while so there’s no awkwardness between us.”

Maknae Junghwa added with a laugh, “Solji unni is like our mom. She takes care of us well, so it’s hard not to follow her lead.”

Following their change in members, the group headed to the United States for a short break before their comeback. “We had a fun vacation, touring places like Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, Hollywood, Death Valley, and the Great Salt Lake Desert.”

Now that they’re all rested up and refreshed, the girls are determined to work even harder than ever. On their title track, “I Feel Good“, they stated, “Our music has gotten a lot brighter compared to our debut, as it’s music you can jump around and dance to.”

LE actually composed and wrote the song “Phone Ring“, based on her past experiences with an ex-boyfriend, which Hani picked as her favorite track off the album.

Concluding the interview, EXID expressed, “We’re already preparing for our next release after this mini-album. We think we’re going to work hard without any breaks for a while.”

Withdrawal of idol group members expected to continue

Music industry insiders took a closer look at the recent trend of idol members’ taking leave of their respective groups.

On May 24th, Dal Shabet‘s Viki confirmed her withdrawal from her group, while Dalmatian‘s Day Day also left the group, and back in April, EXID‘s Yuzi, Dami, and Haeryung also announced their withdrawal from their group. TAKEN (now renamed A-PRINCE) also announced the withdrawal of their members Seungyeol, Gunwoo, and Yoojun, earlier this week.

An anonymous music industry insider predicted that this trend is most likely to continue. ”There are currently a few idol group members who are considering leaving their groups,” the rep revealed.

Reasons for withdrawal include the schooling, career changes, solo careers. But, internal conflict with their agencies is said to be the deciding factor for the withdrawal of idol group members.

On the issue of conflicts with agencies, another music industry insider stated, “Members blame their agency if their debut isn’t a success, and eventually decide to withdraw the group. Even if their debut is a success, members leave if they think their agency isn’t supporting them enough.”

EXID to member changes underway + June comeback

EXID will transform for their upcoming comeback, from a six-member to a five member group after undergoing several member changes.

On April 30th, EXID’s agency, AB Entertainment, revealed, “Yuji has been performing while taking a leave of absence from school, but she decided to return to school. Dami will be studying to get into college. Haeryung is planning on becoming an actress. This was decided after discussing with the members after their promotion of ‘Whoz That Girl‘.

Yuji will temporarily stop working and return to Seoul Institute of Arts. Dami had previously tried to attend college, but had to hold off to become a singer. Now she has decided to go back to focusing on her studies.

In addition, Haeryung, who was a child actress, had the goal of acting to begin with, so she apparently had a lot of worries when she became a singer. The three members have decided to become students and an actress after a long discussion with their fellow members.

The remaining three members, Junghwa, Hani, and LE will accept two new members and will be performing as five member group. They are planning to release a new album in June.

Meanwhile, EXID was produced by star producer Shinsadong Tiger and had made their debut in February with “Whoz That Girl”

EXID and Brave Girls exchange friendly banter backstage

Brave Girls, the protégés of Brave Brothers, and EXID, created by Shinsadong Tiger, met in a waiting room of a music program.

While waiting for the March 16th broadcast of KBS 2TV‘s live ‘Music Bank‘ program, the two girl groups shared a waiting room and used the opportunity to exchange bits of information about their respective companies, starting with what they call their bosses.

When the EXID members referred to Shinsadong Tiger as “oppa“, the Brave Girls acted surprised and responded, “Oppa? We call him chairman“. The two groups also exchanged stories about sad experiences at Lotte World, and what their respective bosses have done for them.

Their friendly exchange drew the attention of the staff and the bystanders in the waiting room. Although the Brave Girls, who debuted last year, are sunbaes to EXID, the fact that both groups were created by two of the biggest hit-makers in the Korean music industry, and that the groups were comparing information about their creators and their managing style especially captivated the interest of bystanders.

The information exchange between the two groups came to an end as EXID’s LE stated, “It’s not as if we’re going to move companies; we need to be loyal to our company“.

EXID discusses their reaction to hate comments + reveals what sets them apart

There’s no denying that there’s been a flood of idol groups over the past few years. With groups debuting left, right, and center, it’s taking more and more to impress the public and earn a place in the sun.

EXID (pronounced “ee-ex-ID“), a rookie girl group formed by producer Shinsadong Tiger, is one of the new idol groups who are well aware of the situation. The members stated, “Thanks to Shinsadong Tiger oppa, we have been one of the top-searched groups online, and we received a lot of attention. It seems that they’re giving us attention before our debut because of our association with such a famous composer. Although it’s a little uncomfortable being in the spotlight before our debut, we are really thankful.”

The girls also addressed the hate comments that they’ve come across. “We looked for articles on ourselves and read the comments; we also saw that there were a lot of negative replies. Since there are so many rookies coming out, there were a lot of comments that went along the lines of, ‘Another rookie?’ or ‘Probably another auto-tuned group’.”

However, EXID isn’t discouraged — rather, they feel excited and thankful for the attention. They stated, “When we see negative comments like that, we get excited. The excitement rise from the thought of being able to show them our performances and changing their minds. None of the members have been hurt by the negative comments.”

“Truthfully, there are more hateful comments about Tiger oppa than there are about us. He was pained by them,” they added with laughter.

Despite the public’s negative view, the members seem confident that they could become a group that will stand out from the rest. They asserted, “We think that we have our own distinguishing factor.”

The members point out that one factor that could distinguish them from most idol groups came from Shinsadong Tiger and his willingness to give the girls freedom in the way they practice; he also gives them creative liberties in their music and choreography.

EXID stated, “Tiger oppa has a loose training policy, so he gives us freedom in the way we practice. There is no ‘Do this, do that, there’s a lesson at this time’. On the contrary, it’s us who asks him to find us instructors. He lets us practice in the way we want.”

They continued, “As a result, we bonded together to practice, and write up our opinions on hair and costumes to submit to him. He helps us find a color of our own. We have also participated in our album, and even wrote our own songs.”

“It’s an atmosphere in which we can put in our own ideas. Rather than just assigning us a concept or choreography, he helps us come up with our own, and thus, we end up trying harder due to a sense of responsibility. Couldn’t this be something that distinguishes us?”
