She began, “I was often made fun of as an Asian American, especially about my eyes. Since I was born in America and grew up under Western influence and perspective, I thought that big eyes were a must.

Park Jung Hyun continued, “I didn’t have any confidence among my western classmates and I had hard times making new friends.” “Back in the 80′s especially, Korea wasn’t very well-known. At the school I attended, there were only three Asians, including me and my little brother. Kids would squint their eyes and spit at us. I was really scared.”

I also never said a sentence at school. The only times I spoke were when I was answering the teacher’s questions,” she said.
