‘The Thieves’ Breaks Record for Biggest Opening in Korean Film History

The Thieves has finally launched, and it′s already breaking records.

According to the Korean Film Council′s Compiled Ticket Computer Network, The Thieves drew in 436,628 moviegoers on the day of its premiere, July 25. This number breaks the record for highest opening score in Korean film history. The original record was held by The Host with 395,951 in 2006.

The distributor scores for The Host had been announced to be a slightly higher 447,000, but the distributor of The Thieves stated, “Distributor statistics are usually higher than the Korean Film Council’s. We expect The Thieves to also get a higher record when the distributor stats are released on the afternoon of July 26, and it will be higher than The Host’s also.”

The record is more than two times higher than the 190,000 for this year’s highest opening score record originally held by Deranged.

Out of all films released in Korea in 2012, Korean and foreign alike, it ranks in second place.

First place went to The Dark Knight Rises, which sold 440,996 tickets on July 19, the day of its premiere. The Thieves fell just barely behind.

In the box office for July 25, however, The Thieves pushed back The Dark Knight Rises, when The Dark Knight Rises stopped short of gathering its usual 200,000 audience with 194,954.

The Thieves is about a group of thieves that try to get their hands on one diamond.

Director Choi Dong Hun of Tazza: The High Rollers and Woochi directed the film, and cast a variety of actors from Kim Yun Suk to Kim Hye Soo, Lee Jung Jae, Jun Ji Hyun, Kim Hae Suk, Oh Dal Su and Kim Soo Hyun.
