Hallyu wave impacts fashion district Harajuku Japan

The Hallyu wave is continuing to have a significant impact on Japan.

The Takeshita streets of Harajuku, Japan are known to be the ‘hot spot’ for Japan’s most fashionable and dynamic young people. And even in a place like this, there were conspicuous traces of the Hallyu influence.

Amongst the fashion boutiques that sell casual-style clothing, traditional Japanese kimonos, and punk-rock attire were shops that sold merchandise of Korea’s most elite celebrities.

From the inside out, the shops were covered in photos and posters of the celebrities at the forefront of the Hallyu wave.

These stores who in the past have only sold merchandise of J-POP stars have now started to carry K-pop merchandise, and more so as the Hallyu wave blows stronger.

Kyoto, one of the shop owners, remarked, “The number of customers looking for K-pop merchandise is growing by the day. Items such as photos and hand-fans are the most popular. The items that sell that most are from JYJ, and SNSD has been very popular too recently.KARA and Jang Geun Suk merchandise were popular for awhile, but not so much anymore“.
