JJ Project Wants to be Singers, Not Celebrities

Idol group after idol group has been making its debut, and this string of new debuts on end means that music show stages have become more and more crowded with people.

Each group is made up on average of at least four or five members, and this trend has made not only solo singers, but also duos very scarce. There haven’t been many noticeable male duos since Deux, Turbo or Fly to the Sky, making JJ Project, a new duo comprised of the two members JB and Jr., all the more unfamiliar and new to the scene.

The way JJ Project shakes it up onstage or enjoys performing with its debut single Bounce, however, shows just why JYP Entertainment judged that two would be enough for the stage.

The duo has gathered a fairly impressive crowd of fans since its debut. We expected the members to be excited about this, but they were actually fairly calm and serious.

In other words, they weren’t the people they were onstage.

“The stage is a fun place, but we’re always worried that we’ll say something wrong on TV. We’re afraid that if we take it too far, we’ll burn ourselves,” JB said.

Do these boys go wild when they’re not at work then? Not really.

Jr. answered, “I don’t really go crazy when I go out. I don’t even go to clubs.”

On why they didn’t go the manly route like other rookies then, he answered, “Rather than go for one specific style, we want to try a variety of different ones. We can be manly anytime, so we wanted to start out with something fun.”

JB and Jr. are actually big talents. They won joint first place in the fifth wave of JYP trainee auditions.

They also appeared on KBS2’s Dream High 2 just before their debut, meaning they started off on better ground compared to their competition.

“We worked hard for a long time to become singers. We wanted to be a huge hit with our debut, but it feels like we were just big for a while and then [the reactions] died down,” JB said with disappointment.

JJ Project is a rookie with members only in their teens, but it was more determined with its values and goals than any other rookie. Based on the members’ serious attitudes and carefully chosen words, we could see their future would be full of confidence.

“We’re not aiming to sing music that fits the public’s tastes. We’ll sing to the music we want. Everyone sings because they like it; we don’t understand why they say it’s hard or difficult because few people listen to them. We won’t be celebrities; we’ll be musicians and singers.”
